Project objectives

LION logo 150The industrial research proposed by this project will lead to the development of innovative technology for the production of lithium-ion batteries up to the TRL 4 stage, which would result in advanced lithium-ion cells with improved properties, especially from the point of view of specific energy, power and lifetime.

Innovative technology would be based on two things:
1. Development of new compositions of electrode materials and their composites with existing commercial materials that will enable better characteristics of battery articles according to key indicators. Among other things, two-dimensional materials such as graphene and its derivatives will be used.
2. Development of new technologies for applying electrode materials to current collectors. This primarily refers to the dry application of electrode materials to current collectors using plasma application and cold spraying techniques. This technology would achieve a significant improvement in battery performance, especially from the point of view of the output power that is achieved.

The results that will emerge from this project are far-reaching and on several different levels:
(i) Industrial research of this project will significantly raise the scientific level in the fields of research and development of battery cells and systems in Croatia. The results obtained will be innovative and intellectual property protection will be filed;
(ii) The project will enable the development of advanced technology for the production of lithium-ion batteries up to the TRL4 phase;
(iii) Long-term cooperation between the academic community and the economy will be achieved, which will also result in the continuation of activities on licensing the technology and its implementation in the economy and
(iv) Advanced technology will position Croatia on the map of European countries that invest in battery development, making Croatia competitive in the development and production of energy storage systems.
